Investment in hotels and rental residential properties has been booming in the Asia Pacific region this year. According to MSCI, trades of multi-family assets have increased by 1 percent in the first nine months of 2023. Additionally, major markets like Japan have seen a surge in hotel deals. So, what exactly is driving this interest in rental apartments, student accommodation, and hospitality assets? Well, top executives from APG Asset Management, Varsity Group Asia Pacific, and SC Capital will be discussing the top trends in this sector at the upcoming Mingtiandi Singapore Forum on November 14th.
The panel will feature Suchad Chiaranussati, founder and chairman of SC Capital Partners; Rushabh Desai, CEO of Varsity Group Asia Pacific; and Sarah Winbur, a senior portfolio manager with APG Asset Management. The session will be moderated by Michael Cole, the founder of Mingtiandi. This panel discussion is just one part of a full day program that will cover various topics related to Singapore’s real estate market. Over 200 senior executives are expected to attend the event. If you’re interested in attending the forum, tickets are still available for purchase. The first two sessions of the program will also be streamed live on Mingtiandi’s MTD TV video platform.
Asia’s Biggest Investors
One of the notable deals in the hospitality sector this year was the acquisition of a portfolio of 27 resort hotels in Japan by SC Capital Partners, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. This $900 million deal is Japan’s largest hospitality transaction of 2023. With this acquisition, SC Capital added over 7,000 keys to its portfolio of hotels in the region. During the panel discussion, Chiaranussati will share his insights on the opportunities for value in hospitality assets in Japan and the broader region.
APG Asset Management has also been actively investing in rental residential strategies in Asia Pacific. They have backed Greystar’s multi-family ventures in the region and supported Scape’s Australian student housing platform. Winbur, a senior portfolio manager at APG, will provide her perspective on the rental residential market during the panel discussion.
Desai, the CEO of Varsity Group Asia Pacific, has a wealth of experience in the real estate industry. Before establishing Varsity Group Asia Pacific, he led Allianz Real Estate in Asia Pacific, where he made significant investments in rental accommodation in Japan and other parts of the region. Varsity Group focuses on investment in rental accommodation, including purpose-built student accommodation, education, healthcare, and technology-driven space.
