President Biden Nominates Historic Judicial Candidates
President Joe Biden made an exciting announcement on Wednesday, revealing his intent to fill vacancies on two federal appeals courts. Among the nominees is Adeel A. Mangi, a private practice partner, who, if confirmed, would become the first Muslim American to lead a U.S. Circuit Court.
Adeel A. Mangi: Breaking Barriers
Adeel A. Mangi has an impressive background, having previously served on the board of directors of the Muslim Bar Association of New York, the Legal Aid Society of New York, Muslims for Progressive Values, and as an ally board member of the National LGBT Bar Association. His nomination for the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals is a significant step towards diversity and representation in the judiciary. If confirmed, Mangi would make history as the first Muslim American judge to serve on a federal appeals court. This nomination is a testament to President Biden’s commitment to ensuring that the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country.
Nicole Berner: A Trailblazer
President Biden also nominated Nicole Berner, general counsel for the powerful Service Employees International Union, for a spot on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. If confirmed, Berner would become the third out lesbian on a circuit court and the first to sit on the 4th Circuit. The National Council of Jewish Women praised Berner’s nomination, recognizing the significance of her potential appointment. This nomination is another step towards a more inclusive and representative judiciary.
Filling Vacancies in District Courts
In addition to the appeals court nominations, President Biden will also fill vacancies in federal district courts and the District of Columbia Superior Court. The district court nominees include Amy M. Baggio, Cristal C. Brisco, and Gretchen S. Lund, who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to their respective positions.
For the District of Columbia Superior Court, the nominees are Sherri Beatty-Arthur, Erin C. Johnston, and Ray D. McKenzie. Each of these individuals has a unique set of qualifications that will contribute to a fair and just judicial system.
President Biden’s Commitment to Diversity
With these nominations, President Biden has made 203 nominations to the federal bench, demonstrating his dedication to creating a judiciary that reflects the diversity of our nation. These choices align with his promise to ensure that our courts represent a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds.
The White House’s announcement is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and equitable judicial system. As these nominees move through the confirmation process, their appointments will mark a historic moment in our nation’s legal landscape.
