Polish NGO Criticizes Government for Lack of Sex Education as HIV Cases Rise
A Polish NGO has voiced its concerns over the government’s restrictions on sex education as the country experiences a surge in HIV cases. With Poland being a devoutly Catholic nation, the issue of sex education has been a contentious one.
Alarming Increase in HIV Cases
According to the Institute of Public Health (NIZP), Poland has recorded nearly 2,600 new HIV cases by mid-November this year. This marks a significant increase compared to previous years, where the annual number of new cases ranged from 1,000 to 1,600.
Decline in Sex Education
Magdalena Ankiersztejn-Bartczak, who heads the Foundation for Social Education NGO, criticized the government for the decline in sex education over the past eight years. She attributed this decline to the pro-Catholic stance of the government, which has influenced the direction of education in the country. Sex education is not mandatory in Polish schools and is often only briefly covered. The current conservative government has neglected and criticized the subject since coming to power in 2015. NGOs that provide sex education to young people have been gradually pushed out of schools.
The Importance of Sex Education in Combating HIV
Ankiersztejn-Bartczak emphasized the crucial role of sex education in combating HIV, as the virus is primarily transmitted through sexual contact. Despite having knowledge about the means of transmission for four decades, Poland is witnessing a rise in new cases while Western Europe experiences a decline. It is important to note that the actual number of cases could be much higher, as many go unnoticed and unreported. The National AIDS Centre estimates that only 10 percent of Polish adults have been tested for HIV, and at least 30 percent of those who are HIV-positive are unaware of their infection.
Challenges in Diagnosis and Prevention
Ankiersztejn-Bartczak highlighted that more than half of the HIV cases in Poland are diagnosed late, often due to failures in prevention. The National AIDS Centre attributes the increase in new cases partly to the catch-up process after the COVID-19 pandemic, as health centers were overwhelmed during that time. The arrival of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine, where HIV is a significant problem, following Russia’s invasion last year has also impacted the statistics.
Conclusion
The lack of comprehensive sex education in Poland has become a pressing issue as HIV cases continue to rise. The government’s restrictions and neglect of this crucial aspect of public health have drawn criticism from NGOs. It is essential to prioritize sex education and raise awareness to effectively combat the spread of HIV in the country.
