The UAE’s Ambitious Bet on AI: Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is not your average university. Founded in 2019 as part of the UAE’s national strategy for AI, MBZUAI is a testament to the country’s commitment to harnessing the power of AI for future growth and prosperity. Located in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, this university is at the forefront of the UAE’s push towards becoming a global leader in AI.

A Young University with Big Dreams

While MBZUAI may not yet be a household name in the world of AI research, it is making significant strides for a four-year-old institution. With 276 students from over 40 countries, including 19% from the UAE, the university is attracting a diverse group of talented individuals. Of the 111 graduates produced so far, an impressive 90% have chosen to stay in the UAE, either working in industry or pursuing further studies.

Developing Local Talent and Leading the Way

MBZUAI’s mission is clear: to develop local talent and serve as a think-tank for the region. The university offers executive education and graduate degrees in various AI programs, including computer vision, machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. Despite its young age, MBZUAI has already established itself as a thought leader in the field.

Ramping up Research with Cutting-Edge Facilities

MBZUAI is not just focused on education; it is also investing in research. The university has designed and built a state-of-the-art campus supercomputing center (CSCC) optimized for distributed AI computation. This center will house a new supercomputer being developed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The CSCC will not only support fundamental research but also provide assistance to established industrial players and startups.

    Attracting World-Class Researchers

MBZUAI has managed to attract some of the brightest minds in the field of AI. One notable figure is Eric Xing, the university’s first president. Xing, a former professor at Carnegie Mellon University, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to MBZUAI. His background includes work at other prestigious institutions such as Stanford University and Facebook. Xing’s presence further solidifies MBZUAI’s position as a hub for cutting-edge AI research.

With its ambitious goals and investments in research and talent development, MBZUAI is well on its way to becoming a global leader in AI. The UAE’s bet on this new university is a testament to its commitment to innovation and its determination to shape the future through AI.

As the president of MBZUAI, Xing is leading the way in developing the university’s fundamental research program. And it’s clear that they’re making great progress. In fact, as of October, MBZUAI researchers have already presented 597 research papers for the year 2023. Xing has also been instrumental in establishing partnerships with prestigious organizations such as IBM, Carnegie Mellon University, École Polytechnique, the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and the Abu Dhabi School of Government.

A role in the larger ecosystem

MBZUAI doesn’t just operate in isolation. They actively collaborate with other organizations on specific projects. For example, they’ve partnered with Core42, a subsidiary of G42, and US-based Cerebras to develop Jais, an Arabic language model that has recently been released as open source. Xing and the partners are continuing to work on more advanced versions of Jais, which Xing believes will have far-reaching benefits beyond just natural language understanding.

    Investing in life sciences

One area where MBZUAI has made significant investments is in life sciences. This is not surprising considering Xing’s background in molecular biology and biochemistry. The university is specifically focused on DNA sequencing and disease prediction, both of which have immediate practical applications. For example, DNA sequencing is used by the Emirati Genome Programme, while disease prediction algorithms are used by SEHA to predict heart attacks and other coronary diseases.

    The potential of AI

As a recognized expert in AI on a global scale, Xing is frequently asked to comment on the benefits of AI and the role that the UAE plays in the larger scheme of things. In a televised interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson, Xing highlighted some of the potential benefits of the foundation model technology being developed by researchers in the UAE and around the world. He believes that AI systems, specifically foundation models, will be crucial in domains such as drug design, climate modeling, and energy control, where human intelligence alone is insufficient to handle the complexity.

The UAE’s early adoption of AI

According to Xing, the UAE is one of the few nations that has fully embraced AI at an early stage. The country sees AI as a key driver for moving away from an energy-driven economy. By developing domestic capabilities for basic research and development, the UAE is positioning itself as a major player in the global competition.

Playing a role in influencing decision makers

In the same CNN interview, Xing emphasized the role that MBZUAI plays as a think-tank, helping government officials and stakeholders understand the implications of AI. He stated, “We are very actively playing our role as a think-tank to help our government officials and stakeholders to understand the implication of AI in terms of the technological nuances behind it – the risks and also the potential. And that’s where we see the university play the best role in influencing the decision makers.”

Engaging with Technology in the UAE

Technology is rapidly transforming various sectors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including healthcare and transportation. Let’s take a closer look at some recent developments in the country.

    Improving Healthcare through Information Technology

The UAE is making significant strides in enhancing its healthcare system through the use of information technology. By leveraging digital tools and solutions, healthcare providers are able to streamline processes, improve patient care, and enhance overall efficiency.

One example of this is the implementation of electronic health records (EHRs) across healthcare facilities in the UAE. EHRs allow for seamless sharing of patient information between different healthcare providers, ensuring that individuals receive the best possible care regardless of where they seek treatment.

Additionally, the UAE has been investing in telemedicine services, which enable patients to consult with healthcare professionals remotely. This has proven especially beneficial in rural areas where access to healthcare facilities may be limited.

By embracing information technology, the UAE is not only improving healthcare outcomes but also positioning itself as a leader in the field.

    Advancing Drone Technology in Dubai

Dubai is known for its innovative approach to technology, and its drone program is no exception. The city has been actively exploring the use of drones for various applications, including delivery services and surveillance.

Recently, Dubai’s drone program received another boost, further propelling its development. The city is investing in research and development, as well as regulatory frameworks, to ensure the safe and efficient integration of drones into its airspace.

With the potential to revolutionize industries such as logistics and transportation, Dubai’s drone program is an exciting initiative to watch.

    Conclusion

The UAE continues to embrace technology and leverage its benefits across different sectors. From improving healthcare through information technology to advancing drone programs in Dubai, the country is at the forefront of innovation.

As technology continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how the UAE further harnesses its potential to drive progress and enhance the lives of its citizens.
